We do what we can to support local artists by displaying their work in our restaurants. This month we have photography by Matthew Neiderhauser and Josh & Gideon Balloch on display at our Bei Tai Ping Qiao location.
Matthew Neiderhauser | Visions of Modernity
Matthew Niederhauser is an independent photographer based in Beijing, whose work has been featured in such prestigious periodicals as Time Magazine, The New Yorker, Guardian Observer and the New York Times. Neiderhauser most recently edited soundcaptial, an authoritative volume on Beijing’s underground music scene.
The photographs on exhibit are from Neidhauser’s Visions of Modernity project. The project seeks to deconstruct perceptions of China as a monolith through photo documentary of “the conventions and everyday dispositions of individuals suspended within Beijing’s shifting socio-economic spectrum.”
Josh Balloch & Gideon Balloch | Beijing
Beijing-born and raised brothers, Josh and Gideon began photographing the capital last summer, alternatively turning their lens on dilapidated danwei apartment complexes, vast industrial cityscapes and ancient hutongs. Collectively, their works present a stirring image of a multifaceted contemporary urban landscape. Individually, their works convey personal tales of intimacy and community.
The Gideon Brother’s work graces the cover and many pages of Fodor’s 2008 Olympic Edition Beijing Guide. This is their first exhibition.
